Historical Note:

This bowl features a depiction of the distinctive awanyu figure.  Awanyu, the Tewa guardian of water, is possibly the local conception of the feathered serpent, a Mesoamerican water deity. Renderings of the awanyu commonly divide the interior fields of bowls into halves, thirds, or quarters. Two Macaws are featured in the bottom of the bowl, with stylized bird motifs along the sky band of the bowl.
