Historical Note: This is one of the finest known examples of fish portrayed in a Mimbres bowl.

Next to the abundant insect illustrations, paintings of fish are one of the most frequent animals depicted by the Mimbres artist. Fish undoubtedly played an important role in the mythology of the Mimbres Indians. A few of the pueblo stories mention fish, people changing into fish, and many of the Mimbres headdresses that are worn show the presence of
fish skeletons as a prominent part of the adornment.
