- Catalog # G-22 Mimbres Birthing Bowl - A.D. 1150 Site: Mimbres Valley, New Mexico Collection: Peabody Museum
Historical Note: Women giving birth. This women has carefully laid her clothing aside. Her belt and sash can be seen over her left shoulder. Using the squat position, she is giving birth. The expression on the infant's face is comical and is an example of abundant humor in Mimbres art. This bowl was specially made to wash the new infant and in most cases was broken after the washing ceremony. |
