Historical Note:  

This bowl features a depiction of the distinctive awanyu figure.  Awanyu, the Tewa guardian of water, is possibly the local conception of the feathered serpent, a Mesoamerican water deity. Renderings of the awanyu commonly divide the interior fields of bowls into halves, thirds, or quarters. Bird motifs are also found in the panels of this bowl.
