"CAPTURING A EAGLE"

1/10

Iron Oxide on Stone

SITE EAST OF THE PETRIFIED FOREST, ARIZONA

This scene at a site located east of the Petrified Forest in Arizona, is representative of the Hopi eagle capturing practices that are still carried out today. At the time of a capture, young birds are often retrieved on ropes, these ropes were woven from the fiber of the yucca plant in the early prehistory of the southwest. The rope was attached to a long pole and dangled over a cliff into the nest of a eagle or hawk, the young eagle was than snared and pulled from the nest. The eagle was taken back to the village where it was honored in a sacred ceremony.
